With every cuckoo clock you will receive detailed instructions on setup and maintenance. The cuckoo clocks have been packed carefully and have been secured in many ways in order to arrive undamaged in all parts of the world. Some of the transport safety preparations have to be removed before you can set up your new cuckoo clock. Basically most cuckoo clocks with a mechanical movement / clockwork are setup in the same way/procedure. There are slight differences between cuckoo clocks with music and without music and also concerning night shut off and the style of the cuckoo clock (chalet cuckoo clock or carved cuckoo clock).
Also between the different manufacturers there are small differences. As basis we have taken the Anton Schneider cuckoo clock intructions. Now as you have received your new cuckoo clock open the carton to see your wonderful new timepiece from the Black Forest in Germany. Depending on what kind of cuckoo clock you have chosen (Chalet style cuckoo clock = A; or carved style/hunters style cuckoo clock = B) your cuckoo clock needs a slightly different setup. The cuckoo clock carton contains the clock, top carvings and any other top attachments such as antlers and deer. The pendulum and the weights (music clocks have 3 weights and clocks without music have 2 weights) are also in the carton. Sometimes the weights are not in the same box to prevent shipping damages.
Please inspect the shipping box if it seems that the weights of your cuckoo clock are missing. Carefully remove the cuckoo clock from the carton by holding the clock frame. Do not pull the figurines or any other decoratice attachement. Now as you have unpacked your cuckoo clock there are several things to do in order to make your clock work. Open the tatches on the back panel. Remove the back panel of the cuckoo clock.
Now, pull out the wire clamps that are securing the two bellows. Do not bend any of the wire connections. This might cause damage to the clockwork.
Remove the cardboard under the strike gong of the cuckoo clock. Check if the extension of the pedulum is going through the slot in the case of the cuckoo clock. Put the back panel back on and close the latches. Congratulations you have done most of the necessary things to make your cuckoo clock work. If you have purchased a carved cuckoo clock / hunters style cuckoo clock then fix the deer head on the attachment and mount it onto the front of the roof of the carved cuckoo clock. You will most likely already have chosen a place for your new cuckoo clock. Please note that a cuckoo clock, because of the chains, needs to hang 1,8 -2,0 meters (6-7 feet) above the floor.
This height is necessary to give maximum extension to the chains. Use a strong srew with a plug and fix it with a small angle into the wall. Position it far enough from the wall to secure the cuckoo clock properly. Make sure the clock is hanging 100% horizontally, straight and flush on the wall to make sure the pendulum is not touching the case.
The cuckoo clock must be in a perpendicular way. There are certain places in the house which are not appropriate for cuckoo clocks. Please see the last paragraph for more information.
Turn the door latch so it is clear of the cuckoo door. The next steps are a little more difficult. Please pay greatest attention that the cuckoo clock is not turned upside down during the next steps once you have removed the reteining wires. Unwrap the chain retaining wire at the bottom of the cuckoo clock and let the chains fall toward the floor. Remove any knots from the chains and pull out the retaining wire totally. Hang the pendulum onto the wire loop (11 a).
And hang the weights onto the weight hooks. Start the clock by pulling the pendulum to one side and then releasing it to swing.
Adjust the clock on the wall to achieve an even tick tock. To achieve an even tick tock move the case carefully from side to side (ie level horizontally) until it has an even sound. Very important: do not turn the cuckoo clock upside down at any time after removing the retaining wire! Here come the last few steps. The clock is set to 12 o’clock noon.

For setting the correct time turn the minute hand (long hand) slowly forward or backwards until the hour and minute hand show the correct time. Never turn the hour hand! If the clock is not keeping good time then this can be corrected by moving the pendulum bob up to make the cuckoo clock run faster or down in order to make it run slower.
Some cuckoo clocks have an adjusting screw instead which moves the bob up and down. Moving the bob has approximately the following effect: + or – 2 mm = + or – 10 Min. Now you can fully wind up your clock. If you have a 1-day clock, pull each chain down slowly to raise the weight. When winding up an 8-day clock support the weight with your hand while pulling up.
Always pull the chains, never the weights of your cuckoo clock. Pulling the weights can result in severe damage to the pulleys. If you have purchased a cuckoo clock with manual or automatic night shut off for strike, cuckoo call and music then you will find the operation lever on the left side of the cuckoo clock or below the clock case (picture no 16a or 16b). Cuckoo clocks with manual night shut off have 2 options. Position I is off and position III is on. Cuckoo clocks with automatic night shut off have 3 options. Position I is permanently on, Position 2 is automatic night shut off from 09:00 PM till 08:00 AM and Position 3 is permanently off.
We wish you a wonderful time with your new Original Black Forest cuckoo clock for many years to come. Cuckoo clocks do not need much regular care. The modern movements are sophisticated, easy to maintain and durable. For cleaning the clock please use a soft dry paint brush.
Please have the movement checked and oiled at regular intervals by a clockmaker nearby to gain a maximum life span. To avoid reducing the lifetime of your cuckoo clock please only use the clock in standard room temperatures.
Temperatures below 5° C (40° F), high humidity of the surrounding air, much dust or dampness may damage your cuckoo clock. Also please do not hang the cuckoo clock above a heater or above a fire place as the very dry and warm air might distort the wooden parts and the oil in the bearings of the clock movement might run “dry”. Please also note that some 8 day clocks will run inaccurate if the are placed close to draft air (window etc.).
Clock Repair Service repairs and services cuckoo clocks of all makes and models. Many cuckoo clocks were purchased from our soldiers stationed in Germany during the war and after. Most of these clocks were good quality cuckoo clocks. Many had hand made and hand painted cases with wonderful German movements in them.
Unfortunately, cuckoo clocks are one of the harder clocks to repair and service and many clock shops did not service cuckoo clocks and many of the cuckoo clocks brought back to the states were never service or even oiled. Cuckoo clocks, as well as all clocks, need to be oiled every 2-3 years and also require a good cleaning every 7-10 years.
The fact that many were not properly oiled and cleaned, a lot of the cuckoo clocks simply do not work. The oil and dirt combination has worn many of the movements out to the point of them needing to be repaired or rebuilt. Our repair shop receives many cuckoo clocks each month both as walk in customers to our shop as well as customers mailing in their cuckoo clocks to our shop. We have great success on repairing cuckoo clocks. Fortunately we are still able to purchase original parts from German manufacturers of cuckoo clocks. We have listed below several pictures and instructions to help you troubleshoot your cuckoo clocks problem if you care to.
Sometimes its just a matter of a small adjustment that will get the cuckoo clock up and running. We understand that there are few clock repair shops around anymore and the few that are do not work on cuckoo clocks at all, that is why we have set up this page. If you are unable to get your cuckoo clock up and running, we will be happy to have you bring your cuckoo clock into our shop or if you are out of our area, we provide a 'mail in ' service for cuckoo clocks to be sent to us for the repairs. Please call us @ 678-462-7856 if you would like to mail your cuckoo clock into our shop, of you can to get further instructions. Listed below you will find some helpful hints and some detailed information on servicing a cuckoo clock. Please keep in mind that, although not all cuckoo clocks are the same their functions and the function of a movement are basically the same.
First check if all the pieces are there. If the clock only has a cuckoo bird and the time, it only uses two weights. If the clock has a music box or dancers on the top front, usually the clock would take three weights (with some exceptions).
There is one weight that runs the time, one weight that controls the cuckoo and the bird action and the last weight controls the music and/or dancers. It is simple to look at the chains hanging from the clock to determine the quantity of weights the clock takes, then see if all the weights are with the Cuckoo Clocks. Also see if it has its pendulum, and the back (which has the gong coil attached), its head dressing and lastly see if the hands are on the clock or broken off. The back of the Cuckoo Clocks is only needed if you choose to hear the gong after the cuckoo call, and the head dressing is only a decoration for the top of the clock. One of the reasons a Cuckoo clock stops working is that the mechanical movement of the cuckoo clock is not level. This generally happens when the cuckoo clock is not hung level or straight on the wall.
The mechanical movement cuckoo clock is driven by the sway of a pendulum, often decorated with a had carved maple leaf. Start by listening to the back and forth swing of the pendulum. This tick-tock sound is often referred to as the cuckoo clock heart beat. The pendulum should swing to the right for the same amount of time that it takes for it to swing to the left, one second for every back-and-forth movement. If the heart beat is irregular, adjust the cuckoo clock’s position on the wall until the tick-tock beat of the pendulum sounds even again. Sometimes the cuckoo clock itself may not be strait and level on the wall, but you are getting a smooth tick-tock then there is an adjustment that needs to be made on the pendulum leader.
This is the wire that the pendulum hangs on. There is a door latch or lock on the door for the cuckoo bird to come out. This latch is used for shipping purposes and sometimes will loosen up and drop down to lock the door. Check to see if this latch is holding the door closed.
Coo Coo Clock Repair Manual
If it is, simply unlatch the door and the cuckoo bird is freed to come out now. There is also on some models, an on off switch. Some on off switches are located on the side of the cuckoo clock and some are located on the bottom side of the cuckoo clock. Look to see if your cuckoo clock has one of these switches. Many of the cuckoo clocks that have one of these switches will have a sticker near it to indicate what is on and what is off. If you have tried both of these procedures and the cuckoo clock still will not cuckoo, there are several other items that will to be looked at and most of them will require a professional clock shop to look at the reason behind the problem.
Many times, your cuckoo clock will cuckoo the wrong hour. Lets say It may be 12 o'clock, however the bird only cuckoo's 6 times. In this example you would move the 'hour Hand' to the number of cuckoo's or chimes, in this case you would turn the 'hour Hand ' to the number 6.
The hour hand is just press fit on a tapered barrel and can be turned ether clockwise or counter clockwise. Many times after moving the 'hour hand' it may feel loose. If this happens, you can simply press the base of the hour hand down using your 2 thumb nails equally until the hour hand on the cuckoo clock is tight again.
Be careful here and DO NOT press the hour hand down to far. If the hour hand touches the cuckoo clocks face the cuckoo clock will stop running. The hour hand just needs to be off the face and not touching anything. If the hands do not line up even on the hour or if the bird cuckoo's prior to or after the top of the hour, you will have to loosen the threaded nut on the front that holds the Minute Hand' down slightly.
Once you have loosened this nut the minute hand will move freely. Line the hand up to the top of the hour (12) then tighten down the threaded nut. You will have to use pliers for this. DO not tighten down to tight. Once the threaded nut is tight, move the Min hand around slowly. When the bird comes out and starts to cuckoo, stop turning, loosen the threaded nut and move the min hand to the top of the hour again. This time tighten the threaded nut down and you should have the min hand adjusted.
If you need to make fine adjustments, just repeat the process.
